Sports and Gym Jackets for Men: Track Jackets and Running Layers
A sports jacket should move with you, manage sweat and block a little wind. Here is how to choose between track jackets, gym jackets and running shells, and what features actually matter.

In India, a sports jacket for men usually means athletic wear, not the tailored sport coat of Western menswear. It is the zip-up jacket you wear to the gym on a cold morning, to cricket practice, for a pre-dawn run in Delhi smog season or on a long flight. A good one is light, stretchy, quick drying and smart enough to wear to a cafe afterwards.
The category has a few distinct types, and each one is built for a different job. This guide explains which to pick for your activity, which fabrics and features actually help, and how to wear sports jackets off the field without looking like you just left the gym.
Types of Sports Jacket for Men
| Type | Built for | Typical fabric |
|---|---|---|
| Track jacket | Warm-ups, travel, casual wear | Smooth polyester tricot knit |
| Gym or training jacket | Workouts, stretching, commutes to the gym | Polyester with spandex stretch |
| Running jacket or shell | Runs in wind or drizzle | Light woven polyester or nylon with a water-repellent finish |
| Warm-up zip or fleece | Cold mornings, cooldowns | Brushed polyester fleece |
| Padded sports jacket | Cold weather training, winter commutes | Woven shell with synthetic fill |
A track jacket is the all-rounder and the most common sports jacket for mens India searches. A running shell is the one to pick if you train outdoors in wind. For more on wind protection, read our windcheater guide.
Fabrics That Work for Sport
Most sportswear jackets are polyester or polyester blends, and for good reasons. Polyester is strong and resists shrinking, stretching and creasing, and it has very low moisture regain (about 0.1 to 0.4 percent), which is why it dries much faster than cotton after a sweaty session.
Gym jackets for men often add spandex (elastane). Spandex can stretch to at least twice its length and is almost always used in small amounts blended with other fibres, which gives a jacket enough give for squats, presses and stretching.
For running in wind or drizzle, look for a woven shell with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. DWR makes light rain bead up and roll off; it is not the same as waterproof, and it wears off over time. Water-resistant jackets handle light rain briefly, while waterproof jackets keep out driving rain. If you train through the monsoon, see our rain jacket guide.
Choosing a Gym Jacket for Men by Activity
- Gym and weight training: a stretch training jacket with a full zip, so you can take it off between warm-up sets. Avoid stiff, crinkly shells.
- Running: a light shell with reflective details for early morning and evening runs on Indian roads, a zip pocket for your phone and keys, and back or underarm vents.
- Cricket, football and badminton warm-ups: a classic track jacket with matching track pants.
- Cycling: a longer back hem, a snug fit that does not flap, and bright or reflective colours.
- Trekking and hill trips: a light fleece or padded jacket as a mid layer under a windproof shell.
- Yoga and stretching: a soft, stretchy zip-up or hoodie. Our hoodies guide covers gym hoodies.

Features That Matter
Ignore gimmicks and check these:
- Hood: a sports jacket for men with cap (hood) helps in wind and drizzle. A hood that stows into the collar keeps the look clean.
- Zip pockets: open pockets lose phones and keys during runs.
- Ventilation: mesh lining, laser-cut holes or underarm vents help in humid cities.
- Thumbholes: keep sleeves down over your hands on cold mornings.
- Reflective trims: important for road running and cycling in low light.
- Flat seams: reduce chafing under the arms.
How to Get the Right Fit
- Measure your chest under your arms around the fullest part, standing relaxed, and compare with the brand's own size chart, since Indian and international brands size differently.
- Raise your arms overhead. The hem should not ride above your waistband and the sleeves should not slide far up your forearms.
- Twist and swing. Rotate your torso and do a few arm circles. You should feel no pulling across the back.
- Check layering room. For winter, make sure a T-shirt and a thin base layer fit underneath without the jacket feeling tight.
- Check the length. Running and cycling jackets should cover your lower back when you lean forward.
Wearing Sports Jackets Off the Field
Athleisure is everyday wear now, but a few rules keep it sharp. Pair a plain black or navy track jacket with dark jeans or chinos, a white tee and clean white sneakers for a casual weekend look. Keep logos small and colours limited to two or three. A matching track set looks good for travel and airports; outside of those, break up the set. Swap the track jacket for a bomber when you want the same easy shape in a smarter fabric.

Brands, Context and Care
Many shoppers search for sportswear names. For context: PUMA was founded by Rudolf Dassler in Herzogenaurach, Germany, with operations from 1948; adidas was registered by Adi Dassler in the same town in 1949; NIKE, Inc. was incorporated in Oregon in 1967; and Decathlon, founded in France in 1976, has its own running brand, Kalenji, named in homage to Kenya's Kalenjin running community. Compare fabric, stretch, pockets and seams rather than buying on the name alone; our jacket brands guide covers more.
To care for sports jackets, follow the care label, wash in cool water, close zips, skip fabric softener on technical fabrics and line dry in the shade. When a shell stops beading rain, REI advises reapplying the DWR treatment.
Questions men ask
What is a sports jacket for men?
In India, a sports jacket usually means an athletic jacket such as a track jacket, gym jacket or running shell, made from light, stretchy, quick-drying fabric. In Western tailoring, a sport coat is a casual blazer, which is a different garment. Check product descriptions to be sure which one you are looking at.
Which fabric is best for a gym jacket?
A polyester blend with a small amount of spandex is the most practical. Polyester dries quickly and holds its shape, while spandex adds stretch for lifting and stretching. Avoid heavy cotton fleece for workouts, as it soaks up sweat and becomes heavy.
Is a track jacket warm enough for winter?
A standard track jacket is a light layer. It is fine for mild winters and gym commutes, but for cold mornings in North India, layer it over a thermal or fleece, or choose a padded sports jacket. For wind on bikes and runs, a woven shell blocks more air.
Should a running jacket be waterproof?
Not always. For light drizzle and wind, a water-resistant shell with a DWR finish is lighter and more breathable. Fully waterproof jackets keep out heavy rain but can feel warm and clammy during hard runs in humid weather. Choose based on how often you run in real rain.
How should a gym jacket fit?
It should be close to the body without restricting movement. When you raise your arms, the hem should stay near your waistband. Twist and swing your arms to check for pulling across the back. Leave room for a T-shirt or thin base layer underneath.
Can I wear a sports jacket casually?
Yes. A plain track jacket with dark jeans or chinos, a white tee and clean sneakers is a solid casual outfit. Keep logos small and colours simple, and avoid wearing a full matching track set outside of travel or the gym.
