Walk into any store or scroll any shopping app and you will see dozens of jacket names: trucker, MA-1, shacket, Harrington, parka, peacoat, bandi. Many are just different names for the same thing; others are genuinely different garments built for different weather and occasions. Knowing all types of jackets for men helps you buy the right one instead of the trendy one.

Below are 16 kinds of jacket for men, grouped by what they do. For each, you get what it is, a little history where the record is clear, who it suits and how to wear it. Follow the links for full guides on the most popular styles.

Casual Everyday Jackets

1. Denim Jacket (Trucker)

A button-front jacket in denim with chest pockets and a waistband. Levi Strauss & Co. made its first riveted denim jacket in the 1870s, and its Type III design first appeared in a 1961 catalogue; the nickname "Trucker" was coined by Japanese vintage collectors in the late 1990s. It suits almost every build. Wear it over a tee or hoodie with chinos or black jeans; see our denim jacket guide.

2. Bomber Jacket (MA-1)

A short, zip-front jacket with ribbed cuffs, collar and hem. Alpha Industries says nylon flight jackets like the MA-1 were standard issue from the 1950s, and it won its first MA-1 contracts in 1963. Great for slim and athletic frames because the ribbed hem defines the waist. Wear it with a plain tee, slim jeans and sneakers; more in our bomber guide.

3. Varsity Jacket

A wool-bodied jacket, usually with leather or contrast sleeves, snap buttons and striped ribbing. It is generally traced to American college sport, with letter awards appearing on such jackets from the 1930s. It suits younger men and casual wardrobes. Keep the rest of the outfit plain: white tee, dark jeans, clean sneakers.

4. Shacket (Overshirt)

A shirt-jacket hybrid: shirt collar and buttons, but in heavier fabric like twill, corduroy or flannel. It is perfect for mild Indian winters and air-conditioned offices. Wear it open over a tee or buttoned up on its own; see our light jackets guide.

Leather and Rugged Jackets

5. Leather Biker Jacket

An asymmetric zip jacket with wide lapels, zip pockets and often a belt, usually in black leather. Leather is hide or skin with its fibrous structure more or less intact, tanned so it does not rot. It suits slim to medium builds and adds edge to simple outfits. Wear it with a white or black tee and dark jeans; see our leather jacket guide.

6. Suede Jacket

Suede is the flesh side of leather, or split leather, with a soft napped look. Suede trucker and bomber shapes in tan, brown or olive feel softer and less aggressive than smooth leather. It suits smart casual wardrobes. Avoid it in the monsoon, since suede marks easily when wet.

7. Field or Utility Jacket

A hip-length cotton jacket with four front pockets, a collar and often a drawstring waist, inspired by military field wear. Olive and khaki are classic. It suits nearly everyone and works for travel because of the pockets. Wear it over a tee or knit with jeans or chinos.

8. Gilet

A sleeveless jacket, often quilted, that warms your core while freeing your arms. It suits commuters and men who run warm. Layer it over a shirt, sweater or hoodie. Avoid bulky quilting if you are broad through the middle.

Weather and Warmth Jackets

9. Puffer Jacket

A quilted jacket filled with down or synthetic insulation. Down quality is rated by fill power, the cubic inches one ounce of down fills in a test, while synthetic fill keeps insulating when damp. It suits anyone facing real cold: Delhi winters, hill trips, snow holidays. Keep it simple with jeans, boots and a beanie.

10. Parka

Britannica describes the parka as a hip-length hooded jacket, traditionally made of caribou, seal or other fur by Arctic peoples; modern versions use water-resistant fabric with padding or feathers. Longer modern parkas cover the hips or thighs. It is the warmest option for snow trips. Wear it over a sweater or fleece.

11. Windcheater

A light, usually nylon or polyester shell that blocks wind and handles light rain briefly; it is water-resistant rather than waterproof. Ideal for bike rides, morning walks and travel. Choose one that packs into its own pocket. See our windcheater guide.

12. Rain Jacket

A waterproof shell, usually with a hood and taped seams, built to keep out driving rain. Fabric waterproofing is often given as a hydrostatic head figure in millimetres; higher numbers resist more water pressure. Essential for the Mumbai and Kerala monsoon.

Tailored Coats and Smart Jackets

13. Blazer

A tailored jacket worn without matching trousers, usually single-breasted with a notch lapel. It suits office, dinners and smart events. Wear navy with grey trousers, or a textured blazer with chinos and loafers.

14. Trench Coat

A belted, double-breasted, knee-length coat with epaulettes, storm flap and cuff straps. It took its recognisable form in the First World War, and the term was first printed in 1916. It suits taller men best but works on most frames when hemmed to the knee. Wear it over a suit or sweater; see our overcoat and trench coat guide.

15. Peacoat

A short, double-breasted wool topcoat that sailors have worn for over 200 years, according to US Navy History. Navy is the classic colour. It suits men who find long coats awkward. Wear it over a crew neck sweater with dark jeans or grey trousers.

Indian Ethnic Jackets

16. Nehru Jacket and Bandhgala

The Nehru jacket is a hip-length jacket with a stand-up collar and button front, named after Jawaharlal Nehru, whose kurtas, bundis and achkans with stand-up collars inspired it. The sleeveless version is also called a bandi, koti or Modi jacket. The full-sleeved, closed-neck bandhgala, commonly traced to Jodhpur, is its formal cousin for receptions. Wear a Nehru jacket over a kurta for festivals, or a bandhgala with matching trousers at weddings; see our kurta with jacket guide.

How to Choose Between Jacket Types

  1. Start with your weather. Mild winter: shacket, denim, field jacket. Real cold: puffer or parka. Monsoon: rain jacket. Windy bike rides: windcheater.
  2. Then your occasion. Office: blazer or overcoat. Weekend: denim, bomber, field. Wedding: Nehru jacket or bandhgala.
  3. Then your build. Short men suit hip-length jackets like bombers and truckers. Tall men can carry trench coats and longer parkas. Broader men look sharpest in structured, darker jackets with vertical zips.
  4. Buy one versatile piece first. For most Indian wardrobes, that is a denim jacket or an olive field jacket.
  5. Check the brand's size chart against your chest measurement, taken under the arms around the fullest part of the chest.

Questions men ask

How many types of jackets are there for men?

There is no fixed number, because many styles overlap. Most menswear guides cover between 10 and 20 core types. The 16 here cover nearly every jacket you will find in Indian stores, from casual denim and bombers to weather shells, tailored coats and ethnic jackets like the Nehru and bandhgala.

Which type of jacket is best for Indian weather?

For most Indian cities, a light layer such as a shacket, denim jacket or field jacket gets the most wear. Add a puffer for North Indian winters or hill trips and a rain jacket for the monsoon. Heavy parkas and wool overcoats are mainly for very cold places and travel abroad.

What is the difference between a bomber and a varsity jacket?

Both are short with ribbed cuffs and hem. A bomber is usually a plain nylon or polyester flight-style jacket with a zip. A varsity jacket has a wool body, often contrast leather or vinyl sleeves, snap buttons and striped ribbing, and comes from American college sport.

Which jacket suits short men?

Hip-length jackets work best: bombers, denim truckers, shackets and short field jackets. They keep your legs looking longer. Avoid very long parkas and coats that fall well past the knee. If you want a coat, choose one that ends at mid thigh.

What jacket should I wear to an Indian wedding?

A Nehru jacket over a kurta is the easiest choice for mehndi, sangeet and haldi. For receptions, a bandhgala with matching trousers or a sherwani for the groom's side is more formal. In winter, add a plain wool overcoat for outdoor venues.

What is the most versatile jacket for men?

A denim trucker jacket is hard to beat. It works over tees, hoodies and shirts, with chinos, black jeans and even kurtas for an indo-western look, and it suits most builds. An olive field jacket or a black bomber are close runners-up.
