Nehru Jacket for Men: Modi Jacket Styles and Pairing
The half jacket is India's most useful festive layer. Thrown over a plain kurta or a white shirt, a Nehru jacket, bandi or koti turns everyday clothes into an outfit for a wedding, puja or office party.

Search for a half jacket for men in India and you will see the same garment under many names: Nehru jacket, Modi jacket, bandi, koti, sadri and waistcoat. They share a stand-up collar, a button front and a short, fitted body. The differences are in length, sleeves, fabric and how formally you wear them.
This guide untangles the names, explains fabrics for every season and shows how to wear one. For colour pairings with kurtas, see our dedicated guide to kurta with jacket combinations.
Where the Nehru jacket comes from
The Nehru jacket is named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister (1947 to 1964). The Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion says it was inspired by his Indian garments, the kurta, bundi and achkan, with their stand-up collars and front-button closures. In the West it became a brief 1960s fad after George Harrison and the Beatles visited India in 1966, with the Western version replacing collar and lapels with a stand-up collar. Some sources note that Nehru himself mostly wore the longer achkan or sherwani rather than a short hip-length jacket.
The closed collar links it to the bandhgala, which means closed-neck. JadeBlue managing director Bipin Chauhan told NDTV, as reported by Man's World India, that the jackets worn by Nehru and Sardar Patel were originally bandhgala jackets.
Nehru jacket, Modi jacket, bandi and koti: what is the difference?
| Name | What people usually mean |
|---|---|
| Nehru jacket | Hip-length, stand collar, button front; with or without sleeves outside India |
| Modi jacket | Sleeveless, stand collar, often slightly longer and in brighter colours |
| Bandi | Hindi word for a short sleeveless vest worn over a kurta, often in cotton or khadi |
| Koti | Common term in north India and Pakistan for a sleeveless jacket or waistcoat over a kurta |
| Waistcoat | A Western-style vest, usually with a V neck, worn with a suit or shirt |
The name Modi jacket comes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is often seen in the sleeveless version. In November 2018 South Korean President Moon Jae-in posted a photo in what he called a "Modi Vest", a gift from the Prime Minister, and social media users argued it was really a Nehru jacket. JadeBlue's Bipin Chauhan has said, as reported, that Modi jackets are slightly longer, fit more comfortably and come in wider colours; that is one company's description rather than a fixed rule.
Fabrics for every season
Cotton and khadi
Breathable and matte. The best half jacket for men's summer functions, daytime pujas and haldi ceremonies. Khadi has a handspun texture that looks good in earthy colours.
Linen and linen blends
Britannica notes linen absorbs and releases moisture quickly and conducts heat well, so it feels cool; it also wrinkles easily. Great for day weddings in heat.
Silk and silk blends
Rich sheen for evening weddings and receptions. Raw silk is less shiny and easier to wear.
Brocade and jacquard
Woven patterns for the groom's family or big celebrations. Pair with a plain kurta so the jacket stands out.
Wool, tweed and velvet
A woolen waistcoat or wool Nehru jacket adds real warmth at December weddings in the north. Velvet is the most festive winter choice. For more cold-weather layering, see our winter jacket guide.

How a half jacket should fit
- The jacket should close without the buttons pulling across the chest or tummy.
- Shoulders should end at your shoulder edge; a sleeveless jacket should not gape at the armholes.
- The hem usually sits at the hip. Over a long kurta it should end well above the kurta hem.
- The collar should stand neatly without pressing into your neck.
For older men, a Nehru jacket in a slightly relaxed cut and muted shades such as beige, grey, navy or bottle green looks dignified and comfortable for long ceremonies.
How to wear a Nehru jacket
- Pick the base. A plain kurta, a white shirt or a fine-knit polo.
- Contrast the colour. Light kurta with a darker jacket, or a solid kurta under a printed jacket. Avoid exact matches unless it is a set.
- Choose the bottom. Churidar or pyjama for traditional looks, slim trousers or chinos for Indo-western.
- Add a pocket square. A small folded square in the chest pocket lifts a plain jacket.
- Finish with footwear. Mojaris or juttis with kurtas; loafers or Oxfords with trousers.
Nehru jacket for formal and office wear
A black, navy or charcoal Nehru jacket over a white shirt and grey trousers is accepted at many formal events, awards nights and office celebrations. A formal Nehru jacket in fine wool with covered buttons looks closest to a suit. For a full closed-collar outfit, consider a bandhgala or Jodhpuri suit instead. A black half jacket for men is also the most versatile party choice: it goes with white, pastel and jewel-toned kurtas. Care
Follow the care label. Wool, silk and brocade jackets usually need professional dry cleaning, shown by a circle symbol on the label. Cotton and khadi bandis can often be hand washed in cold water and dried in shade. Store festive jackets on shaped hangers in breathable covers, and keep zari or embroidered pieces away from damp. For other occasions, explore outerwear on our jacket for men hub, or see a wool overcoat for winter weddings.
Questions men ask
What is the difference between a Nehru jacket and a Modi jacket?
Both have a stand-up collar and button front. A Modi jacket usually means the sleeveless, slightly longer version popularised by Narendra Modi, often in brighter colours. A Nehru jacket is the broader name and, outside India, can have sleeves. In Indian shops the two names are often used interchangeably.
What should I wear with a Nehru jacket?
Wear it over a plain kurta with churidar or pyjama for festivals and weddings, or over a white shirt with slim trousers for formal events. Contrast the colours, for example a white kurta with a navy, maroon or black jacket. Finish with mojaris, loafers or Oxfords depending on the outfit.
Which half jacket is best for summer?
Cotton, khadi and linen-blend half jackets are best in summer because they breathe and do not trap heat. Choose lighter colours such as beige, sky blue, mint or white, and an unlined or lightly lined construction. Save silk, velvet and wool for evening and winter functions.
Can I wear a Nehru jacket over a shirt?
Yes. A Nehru jacket over a crisp white or light blue shirt with trousers is a classic Indo-western look for formal events and office celebrations. Keep the shirt collar neat, button the jacket, and wear leather shoes. Avoid thick collars that clash with the stand collar.
Is a Nehru jacket suitable for older men?
Yes. A Nehru jacket is comfortable, dignified and works for long ceremonies. Older men often prefer a slightly relaxed cut and muted shades like beige, grey, navy or bottle green, worn over a cotton or silk kurta. Wool versions add warmth at winter weddings.
What is a bandi for men?
A bandi is a short sleeveless vest worn over a kurta. It is usually made in cotton, khadi or a light blend and is a lighter, more casual cousin of the Nehru jacket. White and pastel cotton bandis are popular for summer functions and daytime pujas.
