A sweater for men is the backbone of an Indian winter wardrobe. In Delhi, Jaipur or Lucknow it is the layer you wear almost every day from December to February. In Pune or Bengaluru it comes out on cold mornings and late evenings. On a trip to Kashmir or Himachal, it is the middle layer that keeps you warm under a jacket.

Not all sweaters do the same job. A fine merino V-neck looks sharp over a shirt and tie; a chunky cable knit cardigan is weekend wear; a turtleneck can replace a shirt under a blazer. This guide explains the main styles, how necklines change the look, which yarns to choose, and how to care for woolen sweaters so they keep their shape.

A pullover for men is the easiest place to start. A cardigan for men adds flexibility because you can open it when you walk into a warm office. A sweater for men with zip, such as a quarter zip, has a sporty, modern feel. The heavier knit jacket, sometimes listed as a jacket sweater or woolen jacket for men, bridges a sweater and an outer layer. For sleeveless options see our sleeveless jacket and sweater vest guide.

Necklines: Crew, V-Neck, Turtleneck and More

  • Crew neck: round and close to the base of the neck. Works over T-shirts and over collared shirts with the collar tucked in or sitting neatly on top. Good for broad faces and longer necks.
  • V-neck: shows the shirt collar and tie, so it is the classic choice for formal sweaters for men in offices. It also visually lengthens a shorter neck and a rounder face.
  • Turtleneck: turtle neck sweaters for men replace the shirt entirely. A thin black or charcoal turtleneck under a blazer or overcoat is a polished evening look. Avoid very thick turtlenecks if you have a short neck.
  • Shawl collar: a broad folded collar on cardigans and pullovers. Cosy and warm, best for weekends and travel.
  • Polo collar: a knitted collar with buttons. Smart casual and good for men who do not like crew or V-necks.

Woolen Sweater for Men: Choosing the Yarn

The yarn decides warmth, softness and how the sweater ages.

  • Merino wool: fine, soft and versatile. Woolmark notes that merino fibres are extremely fine, which lets them bend and makes them soft, and that merino absorbs moisture vapour and releases it into the air, helping regulate the microclimate next to your body. It also absorbs odour molecules before they become noticeable, which is handy on long office days. Fine merino is the best base for a wool sweater for men worn over shirts.
  • Lambswool and regular wool: warmer and a little coarser than fine merino. Great for chunky winter pullovers.
  • Cashmere and pashmina blends: very soft and warm for their weight. Kashmiri woolen sweaters for men are a classic gift, and Kashmir Pashmina is commonly reported to be a registered Geographical Indication, but labels can be vague, so read the fibre content carefully.
  • Cotton: a cotton pullover for men suits mild winters in Mumbai, Chennai or Kolkata and is easier to wash at home.
  • Acrylic and blends: cheaper and easy care, but they can pill and feel warm without breathing as well as wool.

Pure woolen sweaters for mens wardrobes cost more to buy but tend to look better for longer. Check the fibre percentage on the label rather than trusting words like "woolen feel".

Knit Types and What They Say

The knit is the texture you see. A fine gauge jersey knit is smooth and flat, the most formal option. A rib knit has vertical lines that add texture and a slimming effect. A cable knit has twisted rope-like patterns and feels classic and outdoorsy. A chunky knit uses thick yarn and is warm, relaxed and best as an outer layer on cold days. As a rule, the finer the knit, the dressier the sweater; the chunkier the knit, the more casual. If you want something even more relaxed for home and weekends, a sweatshirt or hoodie is the cotton alternative.

Monte Carlo, launched in 1984 by the Ludhiana-based Oswal Woollen Mills group, is one Indian label known for branded woollen knitwear; many other Indian and global labels also make sweaters. Judge any of them by fibre content, knit density and seams rather than the name; our brands guide explains what popular labels are known for.

Formal Sweaters for Men and Office Outfits

A formal sweater for men should be fine, plain and close fitting. Stick to navy, charcoal, mid grey, black, burgundy or camel. Outfit formulas that work in most Indian offices:

  • Navy merino V-neck, light blue shirt, grey trousers, brown shoes.
  • Charcoal crew neck over a white shirt, navy chinos, black shoes.
  • Black fine turtleneck under a grey blazer, charcoal trousers for client meetings.
  • Camel cardigan over an oxford shirt, dark jeans, loafers for casual Fridays.

When it gets colder, add a wool overcoat on top. For the coldest weeks, see our winter jacket guide on layering.

How to Check Sweater Fit

  1. Measure your chest under the armpits around the fullest part, then compare with the brand's chart. Indian brands use different charts, so do not rely on S, M or L alone.
  2. Check the shoulder seam. It should sit at the edge of your shoulder, not halfway down your arm (unless it is a dropped-shoulder casual style).
  3. Check the sleeves. Cuffs should reach your wrist bone and stay there when you bend your arms.
  4. Check the length. The hem should cover your belt and sit around the top of your hip. Too long and it bunches under jackets.
  5. Leave room for a shirt if you will layer, but not so much that the body balloons at the waist.
  6. Look at the ribbing. Cuffs and hem should spring back when stretched; loose ribbing means the sweater will lose shape.

Washing and Storing Woolen Sweaters

Most damage to wool happens in the wash. Woolmark advises checking the care label first, then machine washing on the wool setting (usually gentle action at 40°C) or on a cold delicates cycle if your machine has no wool setting. Hand washing at about 30°C is also fine. Use a mild neutral detergent and dry sweaters flat after washing, never on a hanger, which stretches the shoulders. Fold sweaters for storage, keep them clean and dry, and air them out in the off season. Remove pills gently with a fabric shaver or comb rather than pulling them.

Questions men ask

Which sweater is best for men in Indian winters?

For most Indian cities, a fine or medium weight merino or lambswool pullover is the most useful sweater. It is warm enough on its own in mild winters and slim enough to wear under a jacket in North India. Add a cardigan for flexibility and a chunky knit for the coldest days.

What is the difference between a pullover and a cardigan?

A pullover has no front opening and goes over your head. A cardigan opens down the front with buttons or a zip, so you can wear it open or closed. Pullovers look neater under jackets, while cardigans are easier to adjust when you move between cold streets and warm rooms.

Is merino wool better than regular wool?

Merino fibres are finer, so merino sweaters feel softer and less itchy, and they handle moisture and odour well according to Woolmark. Regular wool and lambswool are often warmer and more textured. For sweaters worn over shirts at work, merino is usually the better choice.

How do I wash a woolen sweater without shrinking it?

Follow the care label. Use the wool or gentle cycle, usually at 40°C, or hand wash at about 30°C with a mild neutral detergent. Do not wring it out. Press out water in a towel and dry it flat in the shade.

Can I wear a turtleneck sweater to the office?

Yes, in most offices a fine knit turtleneck in black, navy, grey or camel under a blazer is accepted as smart business wear. Avoid chunky turtlenecks for formal settings. If your office expects ties, choose a V-neck sweater over a shirt instead.

What colour sweater should I buy first?

Start with navy, then grey or charcoal. These go with jeans, chinos and formal trousers and suit most skin tones. After that, add camel, olive or burgundy for variety. Keep loud patterns and bright colours for later, once the basics are covered.
