The Complete History of the Yeezy Sneakers

The Yeezy brand is internationally well-known for being at the forefront of fashion. It is a reflection of Kanye West’s fashion taste, confirming what he said in his music, “I don’t see why I need a stylist.” The rapper/entrepreneur evolved into a groundbreaking fashion designer and one of the most influential modern-day icons.

The beginning

Kanye West claims that Guiseppe Zanotti taught him and guided him in the art of shoemaking in Italy. In 2007, he collaborated with Bape on the Bapesta sneaker. That was the beginning of a long and successful journey punctuated by moments of crisis.

In April 2009, Kanye’s collaborated with Nike to release the Air Yeezy 1 in three colourways: tan, grey, and black. They sold out immediately at $215. Kanye’s collaboration with Louis Vuitton soon followed, further consolidating him within fashion industry circles.

After the Taylor Swift debacle at the VMAs in 2009, Kanye went to Italy where to intern at Fendi. This internship ended badly but it raised his fashion reputation another notch. 

Nike Air Yeezy 2

In 2012, the Nike Air Yeezy 2 released in two separate colourways, Platinum and Black Solar Red, retailing for $250. This release was amazingly well-received by designers and consumers alike. Kanye had already worn them on stage in live performances and raised an unbelievable amount of hype. 

The sneaker was successful. It used to always run out soon after release and became a very popular range. However, Kanye’s relationship with Nike deteriorated because Nike wouldn’t pay royalties for sales and had no solid plans for his ongoing contract. The two parties also disagreed on the release date for Air Yeezy 2 Red October. 

Collaboration with Adidas

The partnership between Adidas and Kanye West was announced in late 2013. A change in design helped to make the Yeezy range even more famous.

In 2014, Nike released the Air Yeezy 2 Red October, and that was the end of the Air Yeezys. The Red Octobers are highly sought after, with resells exceeding £8,000 per pair.

Kanye then created a hype for the Adidas Yeezy Boost 750s. He and his associates casually wore the unreleased sneakers to high profile events and on commercial flights. As a result, the sneaker world begged for their release. Finally, in February 2015, the Yeezy Boost 750 appeared in limited quantities and immediately sold out. Kanye assured fans that more were coming. Separate colourways were released in December 2015 and June 2016.
